The space

The Thames Court sits at the Surrey end of Staines Bridge, which gives it a river position that no other venue in the town can match. The terrace runs along the riverbank and is, in warm weather, one of the better places to sit in Surrey - the Thames at this stretch is wide, the flow unhurried, and the view up toward the bridge consistently pleasing. The interior is a large, modern gastropub fit-out that is comfortable without being particularly memorable.

What to drink

The drinks selection favours mainstream over craft - a standard lager range, one or two ales, a respectable wine list, and a small cocktail menu for evenings. It is not the drinks that bring people here; it is the terrace.

The verdict

The Thames Court is a riverside pub that has correctly assessed its advantage and built around it. The food is competent, the service reliable, and the terrace as good as anything in the area. Dogs are genuinely welcomed. On a warm evening from April to September, it is the best argument for a visit to Staines.
