The space
The Packhorse is a converted shopfront on Clarence Street, a short walk from the town centre. The interior is simple and functional - bare brick, pendant lighting, high stools at the bar and lower seating toward the back. It is clean, comfortable, and focused on the beer rather than the environment. This is the correct hierarchy.
What to drink
Eight keg taps, rotating every two to three weeks, with a strong emphasis on London and Surrey breweries alongside a regular feature tap from a further-afield producer. The can and bottle list is curated to about sixty SKUs - manageable enough to make choices without a dedicated twenty minutes. The staff are helpful rather than evangelical, which is the correct tone for a beer bar.
The verdict
The Packhorse is the reason that Staines has a legitimate craft beer scene rather than just a few interesting taps in otherwise unremarkable pubs. It opened in 2018, has outlasted several comparable venues in nearby towns, and continues to operate at a level above what its location and size would suggest.
More in Staines
The Thames Court has the best riverside terrace in Staines and the sense to not let the view do all the work.

The locals' pub in Staines - not the most interesting, but the most dependably correct, and sometimes that is exactly what you need.
