The space

Bull Plain opens up from the lanes of old Hertford into something wider and more civic, and The White Hart takes the corner of it with the quiet authority of a pub that has been here for a very long time. The interior is classic McMullen’s - low ceilings in the oldest section, higher and more open toward the back, a bar that curves around the corner of the room and provides good sightlines to most of the seating. Dog-friendly throughout.

What to drink

As a McMullen’s tied house, the cask ale range centres on the brewery’s core range - AK, Country Best Bitter, and the seasonal programme - all kept in the condition you expect from a well-run McMullen’s pub. The selection is narrower than a free house would offer, but the quality and consistency are higher than many free houses manage.

The verdict

The White Hart is the pub Hertford is built around. Not literally - the castle holds that position - but culturally. It is where local life happens, where people drink after work and on Saturdays and on Sunday afternoons when the town quietens. That kind of embedded-ness is not manufactured. It is accumulated over decades, and it shows.
