The space
The Punter sits on Pound Hill on the west side of the city, close to the River Cam and not far from Magdalene College. It is a proper pub - not gastropub in the sense of somewhere that has replaced its bar stools with banquettes and started charging fifteen pounds for a burger - but a place that happens to take its kitchen seriously. The interior is warm and properly worn in; the garden, which runs down toward the water, is one of the best beer gardens in Cambridge and one of the primary reasons to visit in good weather.
What to drink
The cask ale range rotates but reliably includes two or three well-conditioned ales alongside the usual lager selection. The house pour is a local Cambridge-area brewery, which changes seasonally. The wine list is short but carefully chosen.
Dogs are actively welcomed - there are water bowls at the entrance and the staff manage the mix of dogs and guests with experienced ease.
The verdict
The Punter is the kind of Cambridge pub that residents keep for themselves and resent appearing in guides. The food is honest and executed well - Sunday roasts are the particular highlight. Book for food if you are coming on a weekend. Arrive early on sunny evenings if you want the garden; it fills quickly and does not take reservations for outdoor seating.
More in Cambridge
The most visited pub in Cambridge, and one of the few cases in England where the reputation is not the problem - the reality is the point.

Cambridge did not need another bar pretending to be serious about cocktails; it needed one that actually was.
